BOULDER JUNCTION, Wis. — In the still of early evening, a pair of four-legged figures moved along the shore of White Sand Lake. Even though I was fishing at the time and a quarter-mile away, it was clear what moved in the shadows: a white-tailed doe and fawn. Deer in Wisconsin have acquired their red coat of summer. Amid a lush, green landscape and relatively unpressured by human activity, the animals are at their most visible. Not to mention deer - like the other wild ones that bear young in spring - are at their annual population peak. I spent the weekend in the Northwoods, mostly near Boulder Junction.
